The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Ambassador Olukunle Akindele Bamgbose is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was appointed on 18th August 2017 and he resumed duty on 22nd August, 2017.
Prior to his current appointment, he was the Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs and Chairman of the Nigerian National Authority on Chemical and Biological Weapons Convention, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation from November 2015. He was among the first set of Permanent Secretaries appointed by President Muhamadu Buhari, GCFR. He was the Deputy High Commissioner at the Nigeria High Commission in London from September 2014 to August 2015 and acting High Commissioner of the same Mission from August to November, 2015.
The Permanent Secretary joined the Foreign Service in 1983 as a Third Secretary in the Public Relations and Cultural Division while his first foreign posting was to Mauritania in 1987 as a Second Secretary. Afterward, he served in the Protocol Department of the Foreign Ministry as a First Secretary and Counsellor.
As a Senior Counsellor Olukunle Bamgbose served in the Capital Budget Division from where he was posted to the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations in New York from 2000 to 2005. His wealth of experience at the UN came in handy as Deputy Director, Second United Nations Division from 2005 to 2008. His next foreign posting was to the Embassy of Nigeria in Tokyo Japan as Minister from 2008 to 2012, following which he was appointed Director, North and Central America Division at HQ for about two years. Amb. Bamgbose was later deployed as Director, Joint Commission, Trade and Investment Division from September 2013 to September 2014. Within this period he was instrumental to the establishment of a good number of Joint Commissions and Bi-national Commissions which have improved Foreign Direct Investment in Nigeria.
Olukunle Akindele Bamgbose was born in Ilesha, Osun State on 21st September, 1958. He attended African Church Grammar School, Ilesha and Anwar-ul-Islam College Agege, Lagos for his Secondary School and High School Certificate education. He read Mass Communication at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Enugu State from where he graduated with Second Class Upper Division in 1982. He also holds a diploma in International Finance from the Stilman University, New York. The PS did his National Youth Service with NTA Minna in 1982/83 and joined the Nigerian Foreign Service.
Little wonder his cross-cultural background and experience alongside his accommodating persona stands him out in the Ministry as an officer with no cultural or ethnic biases. His vast knowledge and experience in both the Foreign Service and Home Ministries will undoubtedly be beneficial to the efforts to bring back the traditional values we so much cherish in the Ministry and also rebuild the "ancient landmarks" that have always made our Foreign Service outstanding.
Ambassador Olukunle Akindele Bamgbose is a man of strong cultural and family values. He is married with three children.
