FEC approves funds for Aviation fire equipment, Foreign Affairs Ministry furnishing
THE Federal Executive Council (FEC) on July 8, 2009 awarded contracts worth about N5.2 billion for the procurement of fire-fighting equipment for the nation's airports and the furnishing of the new official complex of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, along with the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Babatunde Omotola and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bagudu Hirse, addressed the media after the FEC meeting presided over by President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua just before departing for the G-8 meeting in Italy.
Prof. Akunyili explained that FEC had, "at its EC (2009) 19th meeting, Conclusion 5 of Wednesday, May 20, 2009, considered but differed the memorandum on the above subject matter, with a directive that the Ministry of Aviation should liaise with the Director General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), with a view to procuring the equipment directly from the manufacturers.
The manufacturers were contacted as directed. Since the current administration is determined to ensure that Nigeria meets all international requirements, which would guarantee safety and security not only at its airports, but also in all arms of the aviation industry, the FEC considered and approved the contract as requested.
The manufacturers' affirmed representatives and sole representative in Nigeria, Messrs Praise Resources Limited, were awarded the contract in the sum of $7,451,419.00 million plus N163,459,691.75 million with a completion period of 11 months", Prof. Akuyili confirmed.
Aviation minister Mr Omotola said apart from the nine fire-fighting vehicles approved for procurement by the Council, additional nine are also being expected from the World Bank while additional one is to be procured for the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria.
He further assured that the total radar coverage for Nigeria by the end of the year is on course as the equipment for Lagos and Abuja are already on ground while that of Kano has arrived the ports awaiting clearance in the next two weeks.

Mr. Omotola added that to save the time needed for the equipment for the other total coverage bases to arrive, discussions are on with the Minister of Defence, Dr. Shettima Mustafa, for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) C-130 Transport Hercules to airlift them back to Nigeria.
The Aviation Minister affirmed that by the time all the equipment arrive and are installed, the ministry "will sign the maintenance agreement with the manufacturers and also send our people for training (on the maintenance) 46 Nigerians have already undergone training on the operation of the total radar equipment in the United States (U.S.).
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs justified the award of the contract for the furnishing of the new complex noting that it is because of "the strategic and important role the ministry plays in conducting Nigeria's foreign relations
He stated that following deliberations on the memorandum, FEC considered and approved the award of contract for the furnishing of the ministry's headquarters complex in Central Business District, Abuja, in favour of Messrs Itex Furniture (Nig) Limited, in the sum of N3,963,997,027.20 with six months completion period.
